A meeting of authorized representatives of Caspian Sea littoral states began Tuesday in Ashgabat to discuss a draft agreement on cooperation in marine scientific research in the Caspian Sea, Turkmenistan’s Foreign Ministry reported.

The meeting is being held at the Caspian Sea Institute. Participants are focusing on a draft agreement among the governments of Caspian Sea littoral states on cooperation in marine scientific research in the Caspian Sea.

The initiative to develop the agreement was proposed by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of the Turkmen People and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, at the Fifth Caspian Summit in Aktau on Aug. 12, 2018. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov proposed preparing a separate five-party agreement to establish a framework for joint scientific research in the Caspian Sea.

According to the report, previous rounds of negotiations confirmed that all Caspian Sea littoral states are interested in developing common approaches. The current meeting is expected to advance efforts to reach agreement on the remaining provisions of the draft.

The meeting of authorized representatives will conclude on Oct. 28, 2026.
