Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov attended a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the 546-kilometer Ashgabat-Dashoguz highway. The new road will connect the capital with the country's northern region and is intended to become a key link in a planned North-South transport corridor, Turkmen state media reported.

According to the project, the highway will start at the Oguz Han Fountain Complex in Ashgabat and extend to Dashoguz. Its construction plan divides the route into four sections with different numbers of traffic lanes: eight lanes are planned for the first nine kilometers, six lanes for the sections between kilometers 9 and 48 and between kilometers 527 and 546, and four lanes for the main section between kilometers 48 and 527.

The project includes construction of a new two-lane bridge measuring 812 meters long and 25 meters wide in the Nayzalydepe lowland, as well as the modernization of nine existing bridges. A total of 136 bus stops, 13 parking areas and seven road monitoring posts are planned along the highway. Video surveillance and speed-monitoring systems will be installed to monitor traffic.

Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedov stressed the new highway would strengthen the country's transport and transit potential, ensure transport safety and significantly increase trade, freight and passenger traffic between neighboring countries.
