The customs authorities of Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan discussed ways to speed up international road transportation and make fuller use of the capacity of the Farap and Alat border crossing points, Uzbekistan’s Customs Committee under the Ministry of Economy and Finance reported Friday.

Delegations from both countries took part in a videoconference led by Gayrat Nasirov, first Deputy chairman of Uzbekistan’s Customs Committee, and Dowlet Bayriyev, Deputy chairman of Turkmenistan’s State Customs Service.

According to the Uzbek agency, an average of 530 trucks crossed through the Alat checkpoint in Uzbekistan and the Farap checkpoint in Turkmenistan daily in 2024. The figure rose to 700 in 2025. During the first 10 months of 2026, it increased by another 11% to 780 trucks. From Oct. 27 to Nov. 2, the average daily flow reached 1,000 trucks, while on Oct. 17 it approached 1,200.

The meeting also highlighted an increase in transit freight traffic through Uzbekistan amid changes in international transport routes. Currently, an average of 165 transit trucks cross the Alat checkpoint toward Turkmenistan each day, three times the 2024 figure.

In response to the growing freight traffic, the sides discussed the possibility of assigning additional staff during periods of heavy traffic and introducing similar coordination mechanisms at railway border crossings.

Following the meeting, the sides agreed to jointly review the proposed measures and coordinate further steps to increase the capacity of border customs checkpoint.
