New Pumps Expected to Enhance Energy Efficiency in Turkmenistan
In the framework of the project, 5 pumping stations were reconstructed in different regions of Turkmenistan

Water and agricultural sectors are the crucial building blocks of the Turkmen economy, therefore the most energy consuming industries. Thousands of pumping units operate in Turkmenistan’s water sector for irrigational purposes.

Recently, more than 120 pumps of the SNP-500/10 and SNPE-500/10 brands were audited; as part of the joint project of the State Committee for Water Resources of Turkmenistan and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) “Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Sustainable Water Management in Turkmenistan", funded by the Global Environment Fund (GEF), reported in a press release by UNDP. The State Committee for Water Resources of Turkmenistan operates the newly installed pumps.

Based on the conducted audit by the Danish company “Grundfos”, recommendations were made on the optimal placement of suction and pressure pipelines of pumping stations and the rational use of electric power equipment, ensuring the most efficient use of energy for the necessary pump performance.

In addition, in the framework of the project, 5 pumping stations were reconstructed in different regions of Turkmenistan, namely in the “Chashdepe” farmers union of Murgap etrap of Mary velayat, the “Sumbar-1” farmers union of Magtymguly etrap of Balkan velayat, the “Enish 2” farmers union of Sayat etrap of Lebap velayat, farmers union "Hakykat" of Koneurgench etrap of Dashoguz velayat and pump station No. 3 in Gurtly district for irrigation of green spaces of Ashgabat.

During the reconstruction, high-end energy-efficient pumps, which consume about 2.5 times less energy than the currently operating pumps were installed at the pilot pumping stations. In Dashoguz velayat, with the construction of a power line of about 1.5 km long and the installation of a transformer substation, the electric pump replaced the rusty diesel one.

Water management is in the heart of the necessary measures taken to combat climate change. The installed pumps serve as a good illustrative example of the use of water-saving technologies in the water sector of Turkmenistan.
