Turkmen Delegation Attended UN General Assembly in New York

A delegation led by Turkmen Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov attended the 74th session of the UN General Assembly during a working visit to New York, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan said in a press release.

In his speech, the Foreign Minister indicated the priority standpoints of Turkmenistan on current issues of regional and global agenda.

Meredov noted that Turkmenistan considers the international law and the UN Charter as the basis of present world order and the condition necessary for the attainment of high level of trust between the states.

Turkmenistan proposed an initiative of adopting a resolution on declaring the year 2021 as the International Year of Peace and Trust. The idea was initially voiced during the address of the President of Turkmenistan at the 73rd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The corresponding resolution, co-sponsored by the 73 UN member-states, was unanimously adopted on the September 12, this year.

On the sidelines of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmen Foreign Minister also held bilateral meetings with representatives of foreign countries, including with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Bahrain Sheikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al Khalifa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the UAE Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan and with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Sultanate of Oman Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah.

During the meeting with Bahraini officials, the parties noted the need to develop bilateral relations between the two states in the context of implementing the agreements reached at the meeting of the President of Turkmenistan with the King of Bahrain during his state visit to Ashgabat in March this year.

During the Turkmen-Oman talks, the parties discussed the development of cooperation in the petro-chemistry sphere, as well as further development of the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman corridor. 

At another meeting with the UAE officials, the sides emphasized that the opening of the Consulate General of Turkmenistan in the city of Dubai is an indicator of positive cooperation between the two countries. The parties also focused on the need for bilateral cooperation in the preparation and holding of the world exhibition EXPO-2020, which will be held in Dubai.
