Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. has developed a set of highly flame-retardant cold-resistant cables especially for the world's largest gas-to-gasoline (GTG) plant in Turkmenistan and delivered them to the plant, according to the Japanese company’s English language press release issued today.
Sumitomo Electric said the cables can be wired even in severe cold environments down to −40°C.
The company received the order for the cables via Japan-based Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd., one of the main builders of the GTG plant.
According to the document, Turkmenistan is located in the southwestern part of Central Asia, where temperatures vary greatly by season. To ensure the safety of the GTG operation in such environment, the plant requires highly flame-retardant cables that can be used down to −29°C. Sumitomo Electric developed the new cables in response to this demand.
The company said the “conventional highly flame-retardant cables could break the jacket, if used in cold environments of around −15°C depending on the wiring condition. Sumitomo Electric's new cables, however, do not break the jacket even in a harsh environment of −40°C, retaining high flame retardancy.”
“The GTG plant is the first plant that has adopted Sumitomo Electric's highly flame-retardant cold-resistant cables,” the Japanese company said in the post, adding that “after the product's development, the Company has received inquiries from other cold regions, such as Russia and Mongolia, for possible adoption there.”
Ahal GTG plant is designed to annually process 1 billion 785 million cubic meters of natural gas and produce 600 thousand tons of ECO-93 gasoline that meets the EURO-5 standard, as well 12 thousand tons of diesel fuel and 115 thousand tons of liquefied gas.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd and Rönesans (Turkey) jointly carried out the construction of the Ahal GTG plant.
