The volume of cargo transportation on the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway line this year is expected to increase by 50 percent compared to last year, Azerbaijan’s Report News Agency reported on Thursday citing Emil Ahmedov, Head of the Cargo Transportation Department of Azerbaijan Railways CJSC.
The head of the department said the BTK railway line transported 1,266 pieces of 20-foot containers in the first 100 days of last year, and in the first 100 days of 2020, the figure increased to 2,148.
“In 2019, compared with 2018, the volume of 20-foot container transportation increased by 43 percent,” Ahmedov said. “If we compare freight transportation via railway wagons, 611 railway wagons with 40 thousand tons of goods were transported in the first three months of 2019, then in the first three months of 2020, this figure increased to 1,572 wagons - 70 thousand tons."
The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway corridor was commissioned in 2017. The 826-kilometer railway passes through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.
The project connects not only three countries, but also the U.K., France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and China.
