EU, Central Asian States Coordinate Efforts on Environment, Climate Change

The first online meeting of the Coordination Committee of the European Union – Central Asia Working Group on Environment and Climate Change (WGECC), organized by the project “European Union – Central Asia Water, Environment and Climate Change Cooperation” (WECOOP), was held on Monday, Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The executives of the units of the European Commission Directorate-General for Environment, representatives of the Ministry of Environment, Land and Sea Protection of Italy, EU Delegation to Kazakhstan, senior specialists on the issues of environment protection and climate change of the Central Asian countries attended the session.

Specialists of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection, State Committee for Water Resources and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs represented the Turkmen side in the meeting.

The meeting participants considered the results of the work done after the 9th meeting of the WGECC, implementation process of the WGECC Working Programme, and the WECOOP project’s Draft Programme taking into consideration the current crisis situation.

The parties also discussed, the priority spheres that will be considered during the 10th WGECC session planned for the spring of 2021 in Almaty.

The WECOOP was established in 2009 as the reference framework for the cooperation between EU and Central Asian countries in the field of environment, water and climate change. The EU renewed the project in October 2019 to run for three years.
