Ashgabat, WHO Discuss Joint Efforts to Combat Pandemic

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov and Minister of Healthcare and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan Nurmuhammet Amannepesov on Monday held an online meeting with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Dr. Hans Kluge.

According to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry’s Monday statement, the officials discussed a wide range of bilateral issues, in particular, effective cooperation between Turkmenistan and the WHO in the field of countering the spread of a novel coronavirus infection.

Following the virtual meeting of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov with the WHO Director General on August 7, the Head of State gave specific instructions to the heads of the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Healthcare and Medical Industry to establish coordinated work with the relevant WHO structures.

In order to fulfill these instructions and comprehensively implement the priority tasks in the field of public healthcare, during the meeting, the heads of the relevant state structures of Turkmenistan once again emphasized the need to increase international cooperation aimed at jointly combating the spread of acute infectious diseases, Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in statement.

During the meeting, the officials gave positive assessment on the current epidemiological situation in Turkmenistan and discussed the progress in implementing the recommendations of the WHO mission experts who recently visited Turkmenistan.

In this regard, the sides particularly noted the need, taking into account the requirements of the time, to make every effort to increase the effectiveness of measures to combat infectious and non-infectious diseases and in their prevention.

The Turkmen side once again confirmed that it will continue to adhere to the recommendations of authoritative international structures and continue active cooperation with the WHO within the framework of joint projects and programs.
