The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) on Wednesday within the framework of its 69th session in Geneva elected Turkmenistan as the Vice Chair of the Commission for the biennium (2021-2023), the official media of Turkmenistan reports.
The Chairmanship of the UNECE for the next two years has passed from Belarus to Austria. Along with Turkmenistan, Switzerland was also elected as the Vice Chair of the UNECE.
In his speech on behalf of the Turkmen delegation, Ambassador Atageldi Haljanov, Turkmenistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, noted that Turkmenistan, as part of its vice-chairmanship, would take an active part in the work of the UNECE.
At each biennial session, the Commission elects a country to preside over the biennium. The commission also elects two countries, whose representatives become deputy chairmen for a biennium. Turkmenistan previously held the Vice Chair post from 2012 to 2014.
