Turkmen President Receives New Head of OSCE Center in Ashgabat

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Tuesday received the newly appointed head of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat John McGregor. During the talks, the sides noted the constructive nature of the established contacts between Turkmenistan and the relevant structures of the OSCE, including through inter-parliamentary ties.

The Head of State congratulated John McGregor on his appointment to the post and wished him success in his work, stressing that, as an OSCE member, Turkmenistan stands for the intensification of a multi-vector partnership that meets the goals of common well-being, the official media of Turkmenistan reports.

During the conversation, the parties noted that from the existing potential and priority tasks of regional and global development, such areas as the digital economy, sustainable energy and energy security, transport and optimization of the functioning of transit corridors, the introduction of advanced technologies are gaining special importance. Ecology, issues related to climate change, rational use of water resources, and the Aral Sea were also outlined as important areas of interaction.

They also reaffirmed the importance of further consolidating efforts against the modern challenges and threats at the regional and international level, including combating cross-border crime, terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and ensuring cyber security.

The relevance of the initiatives of the President of Turkmenistan on the effective use of mechanisms of preventive, energy and transport diplomacy, the peaceful settlement of the situation in Afghanistan and its socio-economic development was also noted during the meeting. In this regard, a special role is assigned to the implementation of large infrastructure projects in the energy sector, transport and communications sector with the involvement of the Afghan side, including the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline, a roads, power lines and fiber-optic communication lines designed to benefit the entire region, according to the report.

On June 2 in Ashgabat, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov met with the newly appointed Head of the OSCE Center in Ashgabat Ambassador John McGregor. During the talks, the sides reviewed the implementation of current projects and discussed promising areas of cooperation.
