Ashgabat Hosts Conference on Environmental Protection of Caspian Sea
The conference participants also discussed the intensification of joint work on preparations for the Sixth Caspian Summit.

A scientific-practical conference titled "Cooperation in the field of protection of the marine environment of the Caspian Sea" took place in Turkmenistan’s capital of Ashgabat on Thursday. The participants discussed the main directions of international cooperation in the field of protection and sustainable development of the marine environment of the Caspian Sea and the rational use of its biological resources.

The event held on the occasion of the International Day of the Caspian Sea was held in traditional and online formats with the participation of representatives of the relevant ministries and departments of Turkmenistan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Iran, diplomatic missions of the Caspian states in Turkmenistan, and a number of international structures, the official media of Turkmenistan reports.

One of the key topics of the conference was the development of cooperation in the field of hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea. In this regard, the Coordination Committee for Hydrometeorology of the Caspian Sea (CASPCOM) is implementing the Intergovernmental Comprehensive Program for the period until 2023.

The conference participants also discussed the intensification of joint work on preparations for the Sixth Caspian Summit, as well as the development and approval of a package of documents scheduled for signing within the framework of the Summit.

International Day of the Caspian Sea is an ecological date celebrated on August 12 by five Caspian states – Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan. On this day in 2006, the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Caspian Sea and the Environment from Pollution came into force. It contains general requirements for environmental protection of the Caspian region and provides for the creation of the necessary institutional mechanisms.
