CIS Meeting Focuses on Decarbonization of Energy Sector
The meeting participants stressed the need to develop instruments to manage greenhouse gas emissions in the electric power industry.

Decarbonization of the energy sector was one of the key topics of the 59th meeting of the Electric Power Council of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), the official media of Turkmenistan reported on Tuesday.

The online meeting gathered the heads of the relevant power management bodies and specialized companies of the CIS member states – Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The council members stressed the need to develop instruments to stimulate decarbonization and manage greenhouse gas emissions in the electric power industry, considered the prospects for cooperation in the field of hydropower and building up the investment potential of the water and energy complex in Central Asia.

The parties adopted a joint statement on the global climate agenda and the current policy in the CIS member states in this area, a number of documents prepared during the meeting of the Coordinating Council of the CIS Electric Power Council on December 15, 2021.

The representative of InterRAO PJSC Taras Kupchikov was elected as the new Chairman of the Executive Committee of the CIS Electric Power Council. He will assume his duties starting February 1.

The 60th meeting of the CIS Electric Power Council is scheduled to take place in Kazakhstan in May-June 2022 in in-person format.
