Turkmenistan Prepares For Hydrogen Energy Future
Turkmenistan is expected to develop the national strategy for developing hydrogen energy.

Turkmenistan drafted its roadmap for the development of international cooperation in the field of hydrogen energy for 2022-2023, which includes a set of measures related to the development of national hydrogen industry.

The Deputy Chairman of the Government, Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov reported on the development of the draft roadmap during the online cabinet meeting hosted by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Friday.

Meredov said the increased pace of global transition in recent years to low-carbon energy and hydrogen fuel will lead to a change in the structure of energy demand in the future.

The draft document, developed in guidance by initiatives of Turkmen President, encompasses large-scale strategic goals and a set of measures related to establishing and strengthening the partnerships in this area, and developing a high-tech and export-oriented national hydrogen energy industry provided with qualified specialists.

Presenting the draft document to Head of State for consideration, Meredov informed about its key aspects, including the intensification of partnership with such specialized organizations as the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

At the same time, it is proposed to create the IRENA hydrogen energy center in Turkmenistan, draw up the national strategy for developing hydrogen energy in the country, and involve foreign experts in this work.

The proposals also include the creation of Interdepartmental Working Group on the development of hydrogen energy in Turkmenistan to work on forming the relevant infrastructure for production, storage and transportation of hydrogen energy and attracting big investments into this sector.

Generally approving the submitted proposals, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that Turkmenistan aims to further increase constructive cooperation with foreign partners, including in the energy sector. Alternative energy has been identified as one of the priority vectors of the national strategy in this area, the Head of State added.

Characterizing hydrogen as the “fuel of the future”, President Berdimuhamedov said its production and practical application is particularly important in light of global issues associated with ecology and climate change.

Emphasizing that Turkmenistan would continue taking consistent steps to promote the fruitful international cooperation in the field of low-carbon energy, and hydrogen energy in particular, the Turkmen Leader instructed the Rashid Meredov to continue the relevant work in this direction.
