Presidential Election Campaign Kicks Off in Turkmenistan
The political parties and initiative groups of citizens will begin to hold meetings to nominate their candidates for the highest state office.

The presidential election campaign in Turkmenistan started on Monday. The campaign includes several stages – nomination of candidates, their registration, meetings with voters and other events.

The start of the campaign was announced by the Central Commission for Elections and Referendums of Turkmenistan during its meeting on Sunday, the country’s official media reports.

The meeting participants approved a calendar plan of activities for the preparation and conduct of elections.

In addition to national observers, international experts and observers will monitor the campaign, according to the report.

The presidential elections in Turkmenistan will be held in accordance with Article 81 of the Constitution, and Article 86 of the Electoral Code, which deals with the holding of early elections.

The political parties and initiative groups of citizens will begin to hold meetings to nominate their candidates for the highest state office.

Speaking at a Halk Maslahaty meeting on Friday, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov said he had made a decision to give way to young leaders and entrust them with the state affairs at the new stage of development of the country.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov intends to further direct his huge life and political experience to his post of Chairman of Halk Maslahaty.

On Saturday, the Mejlis chamber of the country’s bicameral parliament Milli Gengesh (National Council) approved the Resolution to hold presidential elections on March 12.
