RZD Logistics, a subsidiary of the Russian Railways, began transporting container trains from Russia to India along the eastern branch of the North-South land corridor using the transport infrastructure of Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and India.

The first container train departed from the Chekhov station near Moscow, RZD Logistics announced in its Monday press release.

The transportation is intermodal and includes a sea leg, the final port of destination is Nhava Sheva in India’s Mumbai. The estimated travel time of the train is 35-37 days, and the length of the route exceeds eight thousand kilometers.

RZD Logistics said the key driver of this project is a balanced tariff policy of all participants of the route.

Speaking at the sixth Caspian summit last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia should make additional efforts to create a major international logistics hub at the Caspian Sea. Putin stated that the large-scale project of a transport artery from St. Petersburg to the ports of Iran and India will be accelerated by the agreement between the Caspian states on cooperation in the field of transport, which began to work.

RZD Logistics is the largest multimodal logistics operator in the CIS and Baltic countries.
