Turkmenistan will join the North-South transport corridor established by Russia, Iran and India, the Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov said during a press briefing on Friday, the Russian TASS news agency reported.
"This is a well-defined legally formalized route for the movement of cargo flows in large volumes. The agreement on the North-South international transport corridor was signed back in 1998 and came into force in 2000. The founders of this corridor are Russia, Iran and India. Today Turkmenistan has initiated the procedure of joining this agreement," Meredov said.
The press briefing at the Turkmen Foreign Ministry focused on the results of the Ministerial Transport Conference of Landlocked Developing Countries held in Avaza National Tourist Zone on the Turkmen coast of the Caspian Sea on August 15-16.
Meredov stated that Turkmenistan "will continue its partnership with its Russian colleagues in the field of joint work in rail, road, air, sea and other forms of transport."
In early July, RZD Logistics, a subsidiary of the Russian Railways, launched the first container train from Russia to India along the eastern branch of the North-South land corridor using the transport infrastructure of Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran and India.
