Iran is working on a project to connect its national electricity grid with Russia through the eastern side of the Caspian Sea via the territory of Turkmenistan, Mohammad-Ali Farahnakian, Adviser to the Minister of Energy of Iran for International Affairs, told IRNA news agency on Sunday.
He said Iran is working on a plan to connect its national grid to Russia and other Shanghai Cooperation Organization member states through a transmission line passing through Turkmenistan.
For the implementation of the plan, it is only necessary to build the third electricity transmission line between Iran and Turkmenistan because the first two are already in operation, the senior Iranian official stated.
Iran is currently holding consultations to connect its national energy system to the energy grids of the SCO member states through Turkmenistan and Tajikistan.
Farahnakian said this will allow the exchange of electricity among the SCO member countries, adding that this plan was agreed in the Second Caspian Economic Forum.
The Second Caspian Economic Forum was held in October 5-6 in Russian capital Moscow
