President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Tuesday in Baku met a delegation of Turkmenistan led by Batyr Atdayev, the Deputy Chairman of the Government overseeing the country’s trade and textile complex. The sides stated the increase of trade turnover between the countries and stressed the importance of implementing joint projects to further expand it in the coming period.
During the meeting, Batyr Atdayev conveyed the greetings and respect of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov to the Head of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, the Press Service of the President of Azerbaijan said in a statement.
President Ilham Aliyev expressed his gratitude for the greetings and asked asked to pass on his greetings to Serdar Berdimuhamedov as well.
The sides expressed satisfaction with the development of Azerbaijani-Turkmen bilateral relations and exchanged views on energy, transport, logistics and mutual trade issues.
The parties also discussed opportunities for cooperation in shipbuilding, ship repair and other industrial sectors.
Within the framework of the visit, Batyr Atdayev also held talks with the Economy Minister of Azerbaijan Mikayil Jabbarov.
On the same day, the meeting of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Humanitarian Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan was held in Baku. The commission discussed prospects for expanding trade and economic relations between the countries, Mikayil Jabbarov said in his tweet.
"We are confident that joint efforts will strengthen our partnership in trade, energy, transport, agriculture and other areas," Jabbarov added.
Azerbaijan currently imports Turkmen natural gas in accordance with the trilateral gas swap agreement between Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. The agreement provides for the supply of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas per year to Azerbaijan through Iran.
