UNDP and Turkmenistan Expand Cooperation in Healthcare Sector
The projects are fully funded by the Government of Turkmenistan with a total budget of about $78 million.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan on Monday in Ashgabat signed new projects on healthcare to improve access to treatment of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and enhance national capacities in clinical laboratory diagnostics, the UNDP said in its press release.  

The projects are fully funded by the Government of Turkmenistan with a total budget of about $78 million.

In particular, UNDP has launched the following new joint projects to support the national efforts in strengthening the healthcare system of Turkmenistan:

  • “Provision of medicines necessary for prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases and for maternal and child health in Turkmenistan in 2023-2024” project to strengthen the capacity of the national health system to combat NCDs, rare diseases and improve maternal and child healthcare in Turkmenistan. The project will ensure access to quality, affordable and accessible medicines through the procurement of drugs for the treatment of NCDs and other diseases;
  • The "Strengthening Clinical Laboratory Services in Turkmenistan 2023-2024" project, which will aim to enhance the capacity of national health systems in clinical laboratory diagnosis of diseases. The project will support health services to ensure availability, accessibility, reliability and state-of-the-art laboratory tests for accurate and timely diagnosis of the most common diseases such as common infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, surgery, emergency cases, maternal and child health and others.

The "Strengthening Clinical and Laboratory Services in Turkmenistan 2023-2024" project will support primary healthcare laboratories that serve the majority of the population.

Past and ongoing collaboration between UNDP and Turkmenistan in healthcare sector amounts to approximately $150 million, with most of this funding provided by the government of Turkmenistan.
