The ninth interparliamentary meeting between the European Union and Turkmenistan took place March 5 in Brussels at the European Parliament, according to the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Belgium.

The Turkmen delegation included members of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan led by Maksat Kuliyev, chairman of the parliamentary Committee on International and Interparliamentary Relations. The meeting on the European side was chaired by Giuseppina Princi, head of the European Parliament Delegation for relations with Central Asia (DCAS).

Participants highlighted the importance of regular interparliamentary contacts for strengthening trust and advancing dialogue. The sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in the economy, energy, education and scientific programs.

The Turkmen delegation presented information on national priorities for sustainable development, the country’s energy and environmental agenda, and Turkmenistan’s role in developing international transport and logistics routes, including the potential of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality was noted as a factor contributing to peace and security.

On the same day, members of the Mejlis held talks with Belgian lawmakers led by Senator and member of the Flemish Parliament Stephanie D’Hose. The Belgian side expressed interest in Turkmenistan’s economic growth and prospects for expanding cooperation.

The next session of the interparliamentary dialogue is expected to take place early next year in Ashgabat.
