A delegation from Turkmenistan is visiting Tbilisi, Georgia, from May 27 to 31, 2024, with a focus on familiarizing themselves with advanced negotiation practices for potential accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and promoting national trade policies.
As reported by the Embassy of Turkmenistan in Georgia, the Turkmen delegation includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance and Economy, the Ministry of Justice, the Central Bank, the State Customs Service, as well as other representatives.
During the visit, the Turkmen delegation held meetings with their counterparts in the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Revenue of Georgia, and representatives of the customs department.
The discussions focused on bilateral relations in the economic and trade spheres, the process of WTO accession, the main functions and obligations, Georgia's accession to the WTO, and the associated commitments.
The meetings also addressed issues of modernization and simplification of customs procedures, fiscal reforms within WTO membership.
Turkmenistan obtained observer status in the WTO in July, 2020, and in February 2022, during a regular meeting of the WTO General Council, a decision was made to grant Turkmenistan the status of an acceding country ("active observer") to the WTO.
