Ashgabat Hosts 7th Central Asia Climate Conference

The 7th Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2025) opened on May 13 at the Yyldyz Hotel in Ashgabat, bringing together regional and international stakeholders to discuss climate policies, progress, and future strategies, as reported by an electronic newspaper focused on the oil and gas sector in Turkmenistan.

Opening remarks were delivered by Turkmenistan’s Minister of Environmental Protection Charygeldi Babanyazov, World Bank Global Director for Climate Change Valerie Hickey, GIZ Regional Program Director Sergey Makarov, EU Ambassador to Turkmenistan Beata Peksa, and UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Narine Sahakyan.

The inaugural plenary session focused on regional and national climate policies, achievements, and future plans.

An exhibition titled “Exploring Turkmenistan’s Unique Endemic Flora and Fauna” is taking place alongside the conference.

Ahead of the regional forum, several related events were held. Notably, the OSCE Center in Ashgabat hosted a seminar titled “Strengthening the Role of Youth and Women in Responding to Climate Risks in Turkmenistan and Central Asia.” At the Yyldyz Hotel, a training session on “Climate Change: Content Diversity and Target Audiences” was conducted, along with the 60th meeting of the CAREC Board of Governors. On the same day, a regional workshop on developing climate-economic scenarios for Central Asia also took place.

The climate change conference will continue through May 14. Following the conclusion of the forum, participants will be invited on a visit to the International Ahal-Teke Equestrian Complex in Ashgabat.

The events are organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
