Mergen Kepbanov, Director of the Project Office of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) in Turkmenistan, proposed expanding cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in the field of sustainable waste management. The proposal was made during a working meeting held on July 22 at the EBRD Representative Office in Ashgabat, CAREC’s press service reported.
The meeting was attended by Mergen Kepbanov and EBRD representatives, including Eric Livny, Head of the EBRD Resident Office in Turkmenistan, Climate and Nature Specialist Benjamin Peel, and other experts working in regional policy and sustainable development.
Kepbanov highlighted the relevance of this topic for Turkmenistan, which has had a Waste Management Law in place since 2015, supported by several by-laws. He emphasized the need for a systemic approach and recalled a previous CAREC project that developed a thematic collection on waste management.
The EBRD representatives presented progress on the development of the Bank’s new five-year environmental strategy. In this context, the Bank expressed interest in CAREC’s priorities and expertise and in identifying potential areas for further cooperation.
The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) is an organization that implements environmental initiatives and projects across Central Asian countries, focusing on environmental protection, sustainable development and climate change mitigation.
