Turkmenistan has approved unified standards for accounting electricity transmission losses. The Energy Ministry endorsed the “Guidelines for the Calculation and Analysis of Technological Electricity Consumption for Transmission Through the Power Grids of Turkmenistan’s Electric Power System.” The document was developed under the Law on Energy Conservation and Energy Efficiency with support from the European Union’s SECCA project.

The guidelines establish a unified approach to defining and analyzing technological electricity losses during transmission. They outline key terms, the structure of losses and calculation methods for grids of different voltage classes, SECCA reported.

Data generated under the new guidelines will be used to compile reports on technological losses, plan loss-reduction measures, identify grid sections with increased loads and develop optimization measures.

Implementation of the document is expected to improve transparency in electricity accounting, reduce inefficient costs and strengthen the reliability of the country’s power system.

With SECCA support, five regulatory documents have already been developed. Work is underway with national specialists to prepare two additional documents aimed at further strengthening the regulatory framework for the sustainable development of Turkmenistan’s energy sector.
