Specialists from the International Science and Technology Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan have completed the development of a new-generation biological product capable of effectively neutralizing methane emissions directly in the soil layer. The work was led by Durdymyrat Gadamov, a corresponding member and doctor of chemical sciences, and Altyn Rahmanova, head of the biotechnology laboratory, the Golden Age online newspaper reported.
The product is based on natural processes. Scientists utilized local (indigenous) strains of methane-oxidizing bacteria adapted to the region's climate. These bacteria contain the enzyme methane monooxygenase, which converts methane into safe substances — carbon dioxide and water. For ease of application, the live microbial cultures were combined with accessible local materials to create a protective microenvironment.
According to the report, the new product offers several key advantages. It effectively neutralizes methane in areas with high industrial impact. Thanks to the use of local raw materials, the product costs less than imported analogs. Additionally, the development is completely safe for humans, animals and the environment.
The Turkmen researchers' development represents a practical step toward implementing the country's environmental strategy. Under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan is demonstrating its commitment to sustainable development principles: the country officially joined the Global Methane Pledge and is actively introducing advanced environmental control standards in the energy sector.
