Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Vepa Hajiyev met with World Tennis President David Haggerty on Sept. 2 in New York, where Haggerty was attending the US Open tennis championship. The sides discussed the opportunities of hosting World Tennis junior tennis tournaments in Turkmenistan in 2027, the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the U.N. reported.
The sides discussed further developing bilateral cooperation, including preparation of a Memorandum of Understanding and a Roadmap, as well as expanding exchanges between sports organizations.
The meeting also covered Turkmenistan's contribution to sports diplomacy within the United Nations, including through the United Nations Games. The sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in developing tennis and international sports partnerships.
According to the official World Tennis website, junior tennis tournaments for players aged 18 and under provide young tennis players with opportunities to gain international experience and progress toward professional tennis. In 2024, the international circuit stood out with about 980 tournaments held across 130 countries.
