Russian President Vladimir Putin outlined Russia’s proposal to create a digital twin of the Caspian Sea using artificial intelligence at the Caspian Environmental Summit on Oct. 9 in the Avaza National Tourist Zone in Turkmenistan, the Kremlin reported.
According to Putin, the high-precision virtual model will be based on an analysis of data on water evaporation, precipitation and river runoff. It will help calculate possible scenarios for changes in the Caspian Sea’s water level, refine navigation routes and improve shipping safety. Russia has invited partners to join the initiative.
The Russian government is preparing a comprehensive program to study changes in the Caspian Sea’s water level and minimize their negative consequences. According to Putin, the program will run through 2030 and include research whose findings Russia intends to share with neighboring countries.
Putin also welcomed the decision to establish a special commission at Turkmenistan’s initiative. The commission is tasked with identifying the causes of the Caspian Sea’s declining water level and developing comprehensive measures to address the negative processes associated with its shallowing.
Putin announced the launch of an international educational program at Russia’s Sirius University of Science and Technology dedicated to the comprehensive study of the Caspian Sea. The program will allow young specialists to explore environmental, economic and innovation-related issues. The Russian president also invited young people from countries across the region to participate in the program.
