A month-long event on ensuring road safety commenced throughout Turkmenistan on Sunday under the motto "Road Safety - The Peace of Our Lives."
The traditional month has been taking place for several years on the basis of proposal of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, announced on June 7, 2013 at the session of the Cabinet of Ministers. Within the month, thematic conferences will be organized in ministries and departments. Organizers also plan to campaign and carry out educational work among the population, as well as take measures for the improvement of the awareness of drivers and pedestrians in the sphere of traffic safety.
Eco-cycling groups of Traffic Control Service have started their patrol duty near schools and higher educational institutions in accordance with the action plan of the month.
Law on Road Safety regulates the road traffic safety in Turkmenistan. Drivers and pedestrians who violate the rules established by law are held liable on the basis of the Code on Administrative Offenses of Turkmenistan.
International community is also taking measures to ensure road safety. The Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011–2020, launched by the United Nations on May 2011, is the prime example of such effort.
The UN initiated the Global Road Safety Week in 2007. It is celebrated every two years and the last such week was held on May 6-12.
