The World Bank has expressed its willingness to participate in the development of a program to assist countries in the Aral Sea basin, the Turkmen Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Tuesday.
According to the document, a meeting was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan with Ms. Liliya Burunchuk, Regional Director for Central Asia of the World Bank, who arrived at Ashgabat on a working visit.
During a constructive conversation, the parties expressed gratitude for the active position in fulfilling common goals in various areas of bilateral cooperation and discussed pressing issues of multilateral cooperation.
As part of Turkmenistan’s chairmanship over the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) in 2017-2019, a discussion is currently underway on socio-economic and environmental issues, as well as on development of the fourth “Program for Assisting the Aral Sea Basin Countries” (ASBP-4).
During the meeting, World Bank and the Executive Committee of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea signed an Agreement on Additional Financing of the Project for the Modernization of Hydrometeorological Services in Central Asia.
Heads and employees of the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan, the delegation of the World bank, representatives of IFAS member countries and media representatives attended the signing ceremony of the Agreement.
