The Joint Turkmen-Afghan Workshop on Ensuring Security of Regional Infrastructures within the framework of the Istanbul Process on Afghanistan has started on Monday in Mary velayat’s Mary city in the southeastern Turkmenistan.
The seminar brought together government officials from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Internal Affairs, Defense and Energy, the specialists of oil and gas sectors of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, and the authorized representatives of the Istanbul Process member states.
The seminar is organized with support from the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.
The goal of the workshop is to raise the functionality of the regional infrastructure in the context of the Heart of Asia-Istanbul Process, assist the regional cross-border cooperation through sharing of good practices and discuss international experience and approaches regarding the management of potential threats.
During the first day of the event, the parties noted the positive cooperation experience between the relevant institutions of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan and considered the advancement of regional infrastructure projects, including the construction of the TAPI gas pipeline and electric power transmission lines.
The Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process was established in 2011 to provide a platform to discuss regional issues, particularly encouraging security, political, and economic cooperation among Afghanistan and its neighbors. The Heart of Asia is comprised of 15 participating countries, 17 supporting countries, and 12 supporting regional and international organizations.
The seminar will continue until Wednesday.
