Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan will lay a fiber-optic cable along the bottom of the Caspian Sea and install DWDM equipment, which allows simultaneous transmission of several information channels over one optical fiber.
The corresponding Agreement between the Governments of the two countries was signed in Ashgabat in November 2019. A Memorandum of Understanding on the construction, ownership and operation of the fiber-optic communication line along the Azerbaijan-Turkmenistan route along the bottom of the Caspian Sea between the Türkmentelekom telecommunication company and Azertelecom limited liability company was signed during the visit of the governmental delegation of Turkmenistan led by President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to Azerbaijan on March 11 this year.
Agreements were also reached on the creation of a working group, which will include experts from the two countries, to implement the innovative communication project.
According to representatives of the Türkmenaragatnaşyk Agency, the new fiber-optic communication line is of key importance in the context of the development of information and communication technologies and will contribute to improving the dialogue between Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan in this area, as well as the regional cooperation. The cooperation will become the basis for the exchange of experience and knowledge, and improving information activities.
Using the fastest information transmission technology to date, Turkmen specialists will be able to set up high-speed Internet connections with European countries and use the latest transmitting and receiving equipment to transfer large data over hundreds of kilometers.
The project will also allow Turkmenistan to offer transit of data, Internet and voice communications to other countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Iran and Afghanistan. At the same time, the volume of transmitted data will grow immeasurably and reserve channels for information flows will appear.
