Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov held a video conference meeting with his Afghan counterpart Mohammad Haneef Atmar on Thursday.
In development of the telephone conversation between presidents of Turkmenistan Afghanistan, which took place on Wednesday, the diplomats discussed the current state and future prospects of Turkmen-Afghan cooperation in the political-diplomatic, trade-economic and humanitarian spheres.
The Ministers expressed interest in strengthening mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation in the transit-transport and energy sectors, which would benefit the peoples of the two countries, as well as the entire region.
The diplomats, due to the favorable geopolitical position of Turkmenistan and Afghanistan, noted the importance of the Lapis Lazuli transport corridor for building up productive international cooperation in order to increase the region’s economic integration and its trade volumes.
Exchanging views on regional and international issues, the foreign ministers noted the necessity to develop a coordinated approach to solving modern problems, especially to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
The officials also noted the need for coordinated sanitary-quarantine measures on the border between the two states in order to ensure uninterrupted flow of cargo.
In this regard, the Turkmen side reaffirmed its readiness, as a humanitarian aid to the neighbouring state, to construct special terminal facilities in the border railway stations, checkpoints and in some other places on the territory of Afghanistan for the disinfection of railway transport and cargo, similar to those built in Turkmenistan, and also to equip these facilities.
