EU, Turkmenistan Mull Cooperation Within EU Funded Projects

The EU Delegation to Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan organized a meeting last Wednesday that brought together around 30 participants to share experiences and lessons learned from the implementation of EU funded projects in Turkmenistan.

The meeting participants discussed opportunities existing under the EU regional programs and priorities for future cooperation, the European External Action Service said in its press release issued on Wednesday.

The participants included representatives of the Turkmen ministries and agencies, Cooperation Section of the EU Delegation to Kazakhstan responsible for the management of projects in Turkmenistan, experts working on bilateral projects and the EU Delegation to Turkmenistan.

In his statement, the EU Ambassador to Turkmenistan Diego Ruiz Alonso noted that the EU has reviewed its Strategy for Central Asia and in this new context, has expanded areas of cooperation, providing Turkmenistan with a lot of possibilities for participation in regional cooperation projects.

 "The new Strategy has a very strong regional cooperation component, and in this area Turkmenistan has a great potential to get maximum benefit from the future cooperation which will promote bilateral relations between the EU and Turkmenistan," Ambassador Diego Ruiz Alonso said in during the event.

The proposed EU-Turkmenistan bilateral priorities are focused around the national development goals of Turkmenistan as outlined by President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in the national development strategies and action plans. They include such areas of cooperation as green economic development, business climate, renewable energy, rural development, trade promotion.
