Uzbekistan’s capital Samarkand hosted the 23rd meeting of the CIS Intergovernmental Coordination Council on Seed Production. During the meeting, proposals were made to establish a Central Asian Seed Breeding and Technological Center in the Samarkand Region.
The council meeting gathered representatives from the Commonwealth member states, including Turkmenistan, delegates of the CIS Executive Committee, the Industrial-Scientific Seed Association (Semena Association), the official media of Turkmenistan reported on Tuesday.
The seed-breeding center is proposed to be located on the basis of a plant – a branch of Shchelkovo Agrokhim JSC – under construction in the Samarkand region. It will reportedly allow to create a powerful breeding, seed-growing and technological industry, involving in this work the network of breeding centers of the CIS countries, enterprises producing plant protection products, various mineral and organic fertilizers.
The meeting participants also discussed the training of professional staff, in particular, variety testers, breeders, seed growers, geneticists, engineers. The sides also exchanged views on the topics of achievements in the development of new methods of selection and seed production of cotton, and the prospects for the use of botanical gardens and landscaping of rural settlements, small and large cities.
The 24th meeting of the council is scheduled to take place in Tajikistan next year.
