Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent on Wednesday hosted a meeting of special representatives and envoys of the European Union and the Central Asian countries on Afghanistan. Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Uzbekistan Yazguly Mammedov, representing the Turkmen side in the meeting, called on countries to provide humanitarian aid to Afghan people, the Uzbek news website nuz.uz reports.

The EU was represented by the EU Special Envoy for Afghanistan Tomas Niklasson and the EU Special Representative for Central Asia Terhi Hakala.

The meeting participants discussed international and regional efforts for the peace in Afghanistan, the active involvement of Afghanistan in regional integration processes, economic reconstruction of the country and the implementation of various infrastructure projects on its territory.

The Special Representative of the President of Uzbekistan for Afghanistan Ismatullah Irgashev highlighted the main aspects of Uzbekistan's policy toward Afghanistan, including the need for a constructive dialogue with the country's new authorities.

The Turkmen envoy Mammedov stressed the importance of involving Afghanistan in the system of economic and financial ties and to create favorable conditions for the active integration of this country into the international economic space.

“We deem it appropriate, within the framework of regional cooperation on Afghanistan, to discuss how to develop a consolidated approach to cooperation with international organizations and financial institutions in the context of their participation in trans-Afghan energy, transport and industrial corridors,” Mammedov said.

The Turkmen envoy then called on countries and international organizations to provide regular and comprehensive humanitarian assistance to the Afghan people.

The other meeting participants, noting their concern over the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, also called on other nations to provide humanitarian aid to the Afghan people.

A Joint Statement was adopted at the end of the meeting.
