Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday held a procedure for creating the Group of Friends on Sustainable Transport through a virtual platform, which was attended by more than 90 representatives of UN member states, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan said in its Thursday press release.
Opening the meeting, Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Aksoltan Atayeva said Turkmenistan submitted a proposal to the UN several years ago to adopt a special General Assembly resolution on transportation.
On Turkmenistan's initiative and with the support of UN member states, four resolutions on transport issues were adopted, in which, for the first time since the creation of the UN, some common approaches and recommendations on the functioning of global transport corridors were approved, she added.
During the ceremony, representatives of 11 countries, who joined the Group of Friends, stated the importance and timeliness of creating such a platform to provide an opportunity to exchange views on existing transport issues and ways of addressing them.
Representatives of the Agency for Transport and Communication under the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan made a presentation on achievements of Turkmenistan in the field of transport and measures to develop the transport sector of the country.
As a result of the meeting, a letter was sent to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdullah Shaheed with information on the establishment of the Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport.
