The joint border market of Iran and Turkmenistan located on Bajgiran-Godan border has been reopened after 34 months of closure due to coronavirus pandemic, the Mehr news agency reported on Sunday, citing the Iranian official Abolfazl Chamandi.
Commenting on the significance of the market, Chamandi said that before its temporary closure, over $4 million worth of goods were exported annually from this market to Turkmenistan and about $500,000 worth of goods were imported into Iran.
The Bajgiran-Godan joint border market’s activity plays an important role in the economy of Khorasan Razavi province, he added. He further stated that the market creates jobs directly and indirectly for around 700 people.
The Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration announced last week that the country’s trade turnover (excluding crude oil) with Turkmenistan during the first four months of the current Iranian year (March 21-July 22) amounted to $142.84 million. The countries traded 438,957 tons of goods during the period.
