Konak Square, located in Izmir's namesake district, is one of the city's busiest and most historic spots. As a central hub, it’s a must-visit when exploring Izmir. The square is named after the governor's mansion, which still stands today, though its current appearance is due to a 1980 renovation.
One of the most iconic structures on the square is the Yalı Mosque. Though modest in size, its architecture captivates with its octagonal shape and intricate mosaic detailing. Built in 1755, the mosque is unique as its main hall is directly connected to its minaret. The facade mosaics were crafted using tiles imported from Kütahya.
At the center of the square stands the Clock Tower, a symbol of Izmir. Designed by Franco-Levantine architect Raymond Charles Pere, the tower was erected in 1901 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Sultan Abdulhamid II's reign. The elegant Ottoman-style structure stands 25 meters tall and features four Moorish-style fountains at its base.
To the south of the square is the University Cultural Center, home to an opera house, a music academy, and a museum of modern art. Not far from the square is the Kemeralti Bazaar, one of the largest open-air markets in the world, offering a rich mix of history, shopping, and dining.
Another of Izmir’s landmarks, the Historic Elevator, connects Mithatpasha and Şehit Nihatbey Streets, which are separated by a height difference of 58 meters. Built in 1907 by Jewish businessman Nesim Levi, the elevator provided easy access between the districts and is now one of the city’s most romantic attractions. It now runs on electricity and offers stunning views of Izmir from the observation deck.
A stroll down Dario Moreno Street, named after the renowned Turkish-French actor and singer, allows visitors to soak in the old town’s charm with its historic buildings, quaint shops, and the famed Historic Elevator.
"Izmir is a city where history and modernity blend seamlessly. Konak Square is a place that leaves a lasting impression on travelers, reflecting the rich cultural heritage and offering a unique experience of city life," noted Business Turkmenistan representative.
