The CEO of National Gas Company Majid Chegini in a press conference on Monday announced the trial delivery of 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from Turkmenistan.

Speaking to the media, Majid Chegini also informed that Iran has paid its debt to Turkmenistan in three installments, adding that, “now we have increased the volume of gas swap from this country from 4.5 to 8 million cubic meters per day.”

He said Iran has negotiated gas imports with the Turkmen side for short-term and long-term scenarios.

Stating the success of the trial delivery of 10 million cubic meters of gas, the NIGC CEO said that in accordance with the prospects for further development of Turkmenistan's gas fields, plans are underway to increase the volume of imports.

In June, Iran has signed a gas import deal with Turkmenistan, with the potential to reach up to 20 mcm.

In May, the Petroleum Minister of Iran Javad Owji informed that Iran will import around 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan currently exports natural gas to Azerbaijan in accordance with the trilateral gas swap agreement between Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan. The agreement provides for the supply of 1.5-2 billion cubic meters of Turkmen gas per year to Azerbaijan through Iran.
