President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov attended the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday at the UN headquarters in New York. During the session, the Turkmen President proposed to create a Caspian Environmental Initiative, the official Turkmen media reports.

"As a result of many years of vigorous and respectful cooperation, the littoral countries have developed common key principles of policy in the Caspian Sea, including the adoption of the main document – the Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea," President Serdar Berdimuhamedov said.

President Berdimuhamedov added that at the Sixth Caspian Summit held last summer in Turkmenistan, all participants firmly reaffirmed their readiness for close cooperation in the field of environmental issues, which opens prospects for a broad and systematic interaction of the littoral states with the UN.

"In this regard, Turkmenistan makes a proposal to establish the Caspian Environmental Initiative, which will become an international platform for substantive and professional interaction on a wide range of issues related to environmental protection of the Caspian Sea, preservation of its biological resources and solution of a number of pressing environmental problems," President Serdar Berdimuhamedov stated.

The Head of Turkmenistan also proposed the establishment of a Regional Center for Climate Change Technologies in Central Asia. He expressed Turkmenistan's readiness to provide the necessary organizational and technical support for the center to operate in the capital of Turkmenistan, Ashgabat.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, during his working visit to New York for the 78th UN General Assembly session, also participated in the inaugural summit of the Presidents of the US and Central Asian countries in the C5+1 format.
