Friedrich Merz, leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU), was elected Germany's new federal chancellor following the second round of voting in the Bundestag on May 6, according to Turkmenistan's official media.

In the second round, Merz’s candidacy was supported by 325 deputies, allowing him to surpass the required threshold of 316 votes. In the first round, held earlier the same day, he received 310 votes, which was insufficient for approval.

The formation of the new government followed early parliamentary elections on February 23, where the CDU/CSU coalition won the most seats.

Ahead of the decisive vote on May 5, the CDU/CSU and the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) reached a coalition agreement, thereby securing a parliamentary majority and providing the formal basis for Merz’s election as chancellor.
