Turkmenistan and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an agreement to finance the construction of a modern nursing college in Ashgabat worth €64.7 million (equivalent to $75 million). The document was signed during a visit to Ashgabat by ADB President Masato Kanda, the bank’s press service reported Tuesday.

The project is part of the “Enhancing the Quality and Capacity of Nursing Education” initiative — ADB’s first health sector program in Turkmenistan. It is also supported by a $2 million grant from the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific.

A cooperation agreement was also signed between the Turkmen Ministry of Health and Medical Industry and ADB on technical support.

The ADB president also held talks with Toyly Myalikov, chairman of the Central Bank of Turkmenistan, to review current collaboration and explore prospects for expanding the partnership. Kanda emphasized the bank’s readiness to participate in new investment projects in priority sectors of the economy and support private sector development.

The ADB is an international financial institution established to support sustainable economic growth and development in Asia and the Pacific through loans, grants, and technical assistance.
