A study by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) highlights Turkmenistan’s high efficiency in export and transit operations. The analysis examined time and financial costs for moving goods across borders in Central Asia, including key performance indicators at Turkmen checkpoints, according to a Thursday press release by the State Customs Service of Turkmenistan.
Research conducted from August to October 2025 showed that Turkmen road checkpoints in Garabogaz, Farap, and Dashoguz recorded the lowest average clearance time in the region — 37 minutes. By comparison, clearance took about 1 hour 30 minutes in Kazakhstan, 1 hour 40 minutes in Tajikistan, 1 hour 44 minutes in Kyrgyzstan, and 1 hour 10 minutes in Uzbekistan.
The analysis also examined border queue times. Turkmen checkpoints again demonstrated high throughput, with average waiting times of up to 35 minutes. In other regional countries, waits were significantly longer: over two days in Kazakhstan, 1 hour 15 minutes in Tajikistan, 40 minutes in Kyrgyzstan, and 12 hours 20 minutes in Uzbekistan.
GIZ’s findings confirm Turkmenistan’s strengthening position as a reliable and efficient transit link between Asia and Europe. Ongoing infrastructure modernization, the introduction of “green corridors,” and digital solutions are improving coordination and speeding up customs procedures.
