More than 800 camel calves were born and raised this year on the Şihmansur and Hanguýy pastures in Turkmenistan's Mary province, bringing the total camel population, including young animals to 4,000, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on Monday.
The pastures are part of the Sakarçäge livestock farm in the district of the same name in Mary region. Camel breeding is carried out by 20 specialized livestock teams, with the best results achieved by the teams led by Mekan Jumaniyazov, Dortguly Bayramov and Rowshen Pirliyev.
The farm specializes in breeding Arvana, a one-humped camel breed and operates under the State Association of Livestock and Poultry Industry of Turkmenistan. The Murgab Valley has historically been one of the country's main camel-breeding centers due to its favorable natural conditions and extensive pastures.
Camel breeding remains one of Turkmenistan's traditional livestock sectors. Alongside the breeding of Karakul and Saraja sheep, state farms continue efforts to preserve and develop local livestock breeds adapted to the country's arid climate and pasture-based farming.
