Turkmenistan’s state-owned Türkmengaz concern and Afghanistan’s state-owned Afghan Gas corporation signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the gas sector, Turkmenistan state media reported on Monday.
According to the report, the memorandum opens a new chapter in bilateral cooperation in the gas sector. Under the agreement, the sides agreed to work together to develop gas infrastructure in Herat province and supply Turkmen gas to industrial enterprises, power plants and the population.
The memorandum was signed during a working visit to Afghanistan by Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan.
During the visit, the sides also discussed the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, as well as opportunities offered by the Lapis Lazuli corridor and other international transport corridors. The talks also highlighted the important role of the International Seaport of Turkmenbashi in developing the region’s transport and logistics potential.
