Turkmen President Proposes UN Level Discussion on Simplifying Customs Procedures
President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during his virtual speech at the Second UN Global Conference on Sustainable Transport proposed a discussion at the UN level, in parallel with global strategic plans for transport interaction, of issues of harmonization of norms and rules, simplification of customs and migration procedures, and other pressing issues of international cooperation in transport field.

The Turkmen Leader took part in the conference at the invitation of the President of China Xi Jinping. The forum was held under the theme of “Sustainable Transport, Sustainable Development,” the official media of Turkmenistan reports.

As a consistent supporter and active participant of this dialogue, Turkmenistan for a number of years has been initiating significant, meaningful and specific resolutions in the field of sustainable transport, primarily at the UN, according to the Turkmen President.

President Berdimuhamedov said during this session of the General Assembly, the Turkmen side will continue to step up efforts to improve transport resilience in emergencies, building on the General Assembly Resolution titled “Strengthening the links between all modes of transport to achieve stable and reliable international transport for sustainable development during and after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic”.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov outlined the relevance of developing the UN Special Interregional Program for the Development of Transport.

Highlighting the negative impact of the pandemic to the developing countries, primarily to those which lack direct access to oceans, the Head of State said “they were most affected by the forced restrictions in transport communications, and for the same reason it is more difficult for them to reach the post-crisis level.”

Focusing on the matter, President Berdimuhamedov said Turkmenistan, jointly with the UN, plans to host the International Conference of Ministers of Landlocked Developing Countries in April 2022.

Inviting interested countries and international institutions to take part in the conference, the Turkmen Leader said the Turkmen side, as a co-organizer of the upcoming conference, is open to any relevant initiatives, proposals and recommendations for its holding.

The first UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference was held in Turkmenistan's capital of Ashgabat in November 2016.
