The global community can end the coronavirus pandemic next year if it act together, Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Ghebreyesus said in his article published on Monday in the Russian Izvestia newspaper.

“It is essential that all countries, working together, reach the global goal of vaccinating 70% of the world's population by mid-2022," Tedros Ghebreyesus wrote in the article.

“As we enter the third year of the pandemic, I'm sure this will be the year we end it. But it will only happen if we do it together," Ghebreyesus emphasized.

He also highlighted the necessity of creating more reliable systems for ensuring safety in the field of healthcare around the world.

"In 2022, countries will begin negotiating a global agreement to tackle the pandemic, which will help strengthen governance and financing mechanisms, as well as the systems and tools the world needs to prevent, prepare for, detect and respond to epidemics and pandemics," the WHO head Tedros Ghebreyesus stated.

The WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health. Headquartered in Geneva, it has 194 member states.
