Uzbekistan in 2022 more than doubled freight traffic through the ports of Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, the Interstate Television and Radio Company Mir reported on Wednesday citing the Deputy Minister of Transport of Uzbekistan Jasurbek Choriyev as saying during a press briefing on the eve of the summit of the Heads of States of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS).
"According to statistical information, in comparison with the nine months of last year, the volume of freight transportations of Uzbekistan with the participation of ports of Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan this year has increased more than twice, namely from 337 thousand tons to 701 thousand tons," Choriyev said.
The OTS summit will be held in Samarkand on November 11. According to Choriev, it is planned to sign an agreement on international multimodal transport between the member states of the organization and the program of cooperation in the field of transport. Both documents were initiated by the Uzbek side.
The OTS, formerly called the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States (Turkic Council), was established on October 3, 2009. The members of the organization are Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. Hungary and Turkmenistan have observer status.
At the upcoming OTS summit on November 11, Turkmenistan is expected to become a full member of the organization.
