The second meeting of the speakers of parliaments of Central Asian countries and the Republic of Korea took place in Ashgabat on October 14, 2024. The event was attended by the Speaker of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, the Speaker of the Mazhilis of Kazakhstan’s Parliament, the Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh of Kyrgyzstan, the Speaker of the Majlisi Namoyandagon of Tajikistan’s Parliament, the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, and parliamentarians from these nations.
According to the press service of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, the event featured a plenary session titled “Cooperation for Peace, Prosperity, and Mutual Trust” with the participation of parliamentary leaders. The second meeting of the Central Asian and Korean parliamentary speakers was emphasized as pivotal in elevating the traditionally friendly relations between Turkmenistan and Korea, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan to a new level.
In their speeches, the parliamentarians underscored the importance of further strengthening effective collaboration between the national parliaments of the participating countries. The parliamentary leaders exchanged views on the opportunities for expanding cooperation between parliamentary institutions on regional issues and topics of mutual interest.
This meeting was based on an initiative from the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. He had proposed the creation of a “Central Asia - Republic of Korea” inter-parliamentary forum during his official visit to South Korea in November 2022.
On the same day, the second consultative meeting between representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea also took place.
